Title III Avenue to Success

Professional Development - Summer 2005 Kellogg Institute Seminars

Marylen M. Jennings, activity coordinator of the Academic Success Center, attended the Summer 2005 Kellogg Institute Seminars. Jennings said it was one of the most rewarding educational experiences of her 11 years at Seminole Community College. She is in the process of implementing the practicum and updating tutor training.

The Reich College of Education, Appalachian State University, Boone, N.C., houses the Kellogg Institute. The Institute, which is 25 years old, is the nation's oldest continuous advanced training program for developmental educators and learning specialists. The program consists of two components:

  • An intensive four-week summer residence.
  • A supervised practicum following the residency and carried out at the participant's home campus.

The residency portion of the Institute includes four seminars on topics such as Assessment and Placement; Designing Learning Environments; Leadership and Academic Support Services Relating to Developmental Education; and Outcomes and Assessment and Program Evaluation. Seminar Leaders Ed Morante, Ph.D.; Barbara Bonham, Ph.D.; Frank Christ; Anita George, Ph.D.; and Hunter Boylan, Ph.D. are recognized experts in their respective content areas.

The Institute is designed to assist practitioners in expanding their knowledge in the field of developmental education and improving their own programs at their home institution. The program accepts 45 participants who have at least one year experience in developmental education. Upon completion of the two components listed, the participant becomes certified by the Kellogg Institute. The information one obtains from the seminars is most beneficial to the participant and the home institution.
