The TOEFL Exam

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is:

  • For students whose native language is not English
  • Advised for international students planning to study in North America
  • Designed to measure your English speaking and listening abilities

There are three TOEFL subtests.

  • The Test of Spoken English shows how well you are able to speak the language. It helps SCC determine how your language skills might affect your success in an academic or professional environment.
  • The SLEP (Secondary Level English Proficiency) test measures your listening and reading comprehension skills.
  • SPEAK® was designed as a reliable tool for determining English language skills. It measures your abilities with both spoken and written English.

Who should take the TOEFL test?

Although your TOEFL scores can be used for placement at SCC, the College will give you the LOEP or the CASAS to determine your best placement in English courses. The test you take depends on the program you want to enter. The TOEFL test meets SCC's requirement for students entering the English Language Institute.

Your TOEFL scores will not prevent you from enrolling in the English Language Institute. SCC uses the TOEFL score to:

  • Determine your North American English skill level. Your skill level indicates at what program level you should begin your studies. Beginning in the right level is critical to learning English.
  • Identify your strengths and weaknesses. At SCC, we want you to succeed. By knowing what areas you need help in, your instructors can work with you to strengthen your skills in those areas.
  • Measure improvement in your skills. We can see what abilities you have learned and the areas in which you may still need assistance.

What if I haven't taken the TOEFL?

You can take the LOEP or CASAS instead of TOEFL at SCC. Please contact the Assessment and Testing Center for more information.
