CPT Refresher

Computerized Placement Test (CPT) Refresh

You have taken the CPT within the last two years and you would like to improve your score(s).

Students may take the CPT twice in a two-year period. You are eligible to retake the CPT only if you have not started a college preparatory English and/or reading course.

Steps for the CPT Refresh Program

  • Purchase the subtest packet - Purchase the subtest packets from the SCC Bookstore at either the Sanford/Lake Mary or Oviedo Campuses.
  • Begin studying - This is a self-paced program and suggested study time is three hours per sub-test with a recommended time of approximately nine hours for the complete test. The CPT is a computerized test, so it is vital that you practice taking the test. SCC has created an online practice area that you can use to access your abilities and improve your CPT test-taking skills.

  • Certification of Study - Before taking the CPT refresh, you will sign a "Certification of Study" form and submit it to the Assessment and Testing Center before re-testing. Students who complete the refresh course must re-take the CPT before attending college level classes.
  • Schedule the test - CPT refresh testing is available on a walk-in basis between the hours of 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday at the Sanford/Lake Mary and Oviedo Campuses.
  • Pay for the test - The payment process begins at the Assessment and Testing Center. The cost to take the CPT for the second time is $10 (whether you take one or three subtests, the cost remains at $10) per testing session. Payment must be made before testing will occur.
  • Take the test.
  • Final steps - Complete online student orientation and schedule an appointment with the Counseling and Educational Planning Office (CEPD) for results, interpretation and course placement. If you have already completed orientation, you may go directly to advisement.
