What is a Tech Prep student?

A Tech Prep student can be anyone who takes a technical (vocational) class such as computers, electronics, business, automotive, interior design, child care, health, and drafting and plans to continue in any of these fields.

What are the requirements to be a Tech Prep student?
  • Students are eligible in grades 9-12.
    • Requirements for 9-10 grade students: the student is in a technical class and plans to continue in some type of technical class.
    • Requirements for 11-12: the student is in a technical class and plans to continue in some type of technical class and the student must not be behind in classes for their grade level in math, science, or communications. i.e. cannot be a 12th grade student that will not graduate with the rest of the 12th grade class because the student is behind in credits.

What are the benefits of being a Tech Prep student?
  • Student may be eligible for the Gold Seal Scholarship if the student completes 3 technical courses and has a 3.0 GPA. Gold Seal pays 75% of college tuition and fees.
  • A student can take a test each April in eligible technical classes at the high school that will earn the student college credit at Seminole Community College (if the student passes the exam, receives a “C” in the high school course and enrolls in one (1) course at Seminole Community College within two (2) years of graduation). A student can flow into an Associate in Science (A.S.) degree or certificate program and save time and dollars by not repeating the same class after high school.
  • A student will save approximately $200 per college class (estimation of $ saved in tuition and books for a 3 credit class) if the student passes the Tech Prep exam.
Can a Tech Prep student utilize Tech Prep credit at a four-year university?

Yes, but check with the 4-year university. A student must take one (1) course at Seminole Community College first to transfer credit.
