Degree Progress and Graduation

  • What is a Degree Audit?
A Degree Progress Report or Audit is a document that indicates what a student has completed toward his or her graduation requirements. Audits are generated by SCC's computer system and/or by a counselor/adviser and are required for a Diploma Application. Students are encouraged to follow an Education Plan and request a Degree Audit from the Counseling Department as needed (at least upon completion of 30 credits and 45 credits to ensure they are on track to graduate).
  • How can I confirm if my son or daughter will graduate this semester?
The graduation requirements for each degree are available on the Degree Information Web site. Students who are ready to graduate should complete the following steps:
    • Complete a Graduation Audit request form, available in the Counseling Office.
    • Schedule an appointment to speak with a counselor/educational adviser to review the Graduation Audit.
    • Meet with a counselor/adviser to determine if you may be eligible for CLAST exemption. Check the Academic Calendar for CLAST registration and test dates. Note: Associate in Art students will take the CLAST or file for a CLAST exemption (if eligible) prior to graduation. Associate in Science students are not required to take the CLAST.
    • Complete a diploma application and submit it to the Registration Office after registering for the final term of courses.
  • When is my son or daughter's graduation ceremony?
SCC holds graduation ceremonies at the end of the Fall and Spring terms. Exact dates are available on the Academic Calendar.
  • How do I order announcements and a cap and gown?
Students should contact the SCC Bookstore at 407.708.2021 to order their caps and gowns, as well as their personalized announcements.

Grades and Transcripts

  • How can I obtain a copy of my son or daughter's grades?
The College does not release grades to parents. Students have access to their semester grades via SCC's online information system, MySCC.
  • As a parent of a student, why can't I request their grades or transcript?
SCC's policy on confidentiality is designed to comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). This federal law prohibits disclosure of student records information to a third party without written consent from the student.
  • What is the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)?
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, also known as the Buckley Amendment, helps protect the privacy of student records. The Act provides the right for students to inspect and review educational records, to seek to amend those records and to limit disclosure of information from the records. The Act applies to all institutions that are the recipients of federal funding and includes Seminole Community College. For more information, please visit the FERPA information page.
  • Will SCC fax a transcript?
Currently, Seminole Community College will not fax transcripts for the following reasons:
    • Most colleges and universities will consider a transcript sent to them via fax as an unofficial transcript, thus a follow-up electronic or mail copy must be sent.
    • Telephone lines are often busy, which necessitates numerous attempts in trying to transmit the facsimile record.
    • Transcripts transmitted via fax cannot be secured. FERPA requires that colleges protect the privacy rights of student records, and Seminole Community College believes it is unable to do this when utilizing fax technology.

Registration

  • Can I register for my son or daughter?
No. Each student is responsible for their own registration.
  • My son or daughter has become ill and will not be able to finish the semester; what do we need to do?
The procedure your son or daughter will use is academic withdrawal. A student desiring to withdraw from a course after the add/drop period should initiate withdrawal procedures with an instructor or counselor. Withdrawals are not official until the withdrawal form is completed and given to the Office of Enrollment Services and Registrar. Withdrawal deadlines are published in the official College Catalog Academic Calendar.
  • My son or daughter has decided not to return to SCC, what should he/she do?
If your son or daughter has decided not to return to SCC prior to the start of classes they must cancel their registration by sending a letter to the Enrollment Services/Registrar's Office at 100 Weldon Blvd., Sanford, FL 32771, or by calling 407.708.2580. The registration will be canceled and tuition will be fully refunded. If the decision not to return is made after the semester has begun, the student will need to process a withdrawal. In all cases, the student should contact the College to inform us they will not be returning.
  • I have paid my son or daughter's tuition and he/she has decided not to return; how do I receive a refund?
All refunds are processed through the Office of Finance and Budget.
  • My son or daughter did not attend last semester and would like to return; what does he/she need to do?
Your son or daughter must file for re-enrollment.
  • My son or daughter has not applied for admission but would like to register for a course at SCC; what should he/she do?
Students who wish to take courses at SCC but who do not intend to pursue a degree here must attend as a non-degree student. Non-degree students enroll on a space-available basis and are not guaranteed admission into a degree program.
  • Why wasn't my son or daughter able to register for a particular course?
There may be several reasons why your son or daughter could not register for a particular course:
    • Not all courses are offered every semester.
    • The course may have been full at the time the registration request was made.
    • The department offering the course may have placed an enrollment control on the course, so it can specifically monitor who enrolls in the course. In those cases, the department offering the course would need to be contacted.
  • If my son or daughter needs a course and was unable to register for it, what should they do? Who can they talk to?
If a course is required for the student's major and they are not able to register for it, the student should first contact their adviser for assistance, and then the department that offers the course should be contacted.
