Generic Track Course OverviewsThe following courses are required for the Nursing- Generic Track A.S. Degree. For information on electives, please refer to the curriculum. Major Courses:NUR 1020C - Nursing Process FundamentalsThis
course is an introduction to the core concepts of the nursing
curriculum. All subsequent nursing courses are built on these concepts.
Students are introduced the nursing process and holistic care.
Effective interpersonal communication and professional accountability
(legal and ethical standards) are also taught. The role of the
Associate Degree nurse in health promotion, maintenance, and
restoration is explored. Developmental needs and cultural
considerations are as they relate to nursing care are examined.
Students use the nursing skill laboratory to demonstrate their
competence in selected fundamental skills. Clinical experience is
included in local health care facilities. The concepts of the core
curriculum as identified by the Florida Department of Education are
integrated throughout this course.
NUR 1730C - Nursing Process Adults and Children IThis
course uses the framework of the nursing process. Students help adults
and children maintain their basic human needs when experiencing simple
acute and chronic responses to physical and psychosocial stressors.
Students have the opportunity to develop competency in selected
intermediate skills, and learn how to apply these skills for patient
care.
NUR 1214C - Nursing Process Clinical ApplicationsPrimarily
a clinical course in adult health, students develop competence in
clinical skills, problem solving, critical thinking, and decision
making. The nursing process is further integrated with previously
acquired knowledge to deliver nursing care to patients in a clinical
setting. Emphasis is placed on focused assessments, priority setting,
organization, psychological assessment, and communication (both the
theoretical and clinical).
NUR 2732C - Nursing Process Adults and Children IIThis
course uses the nursing process and Maslow's hierarchy of basic human
needs as its framework. The focus is placed on caring for adult and
child clients. These clients are experiencing complex acute and chronic
responses to physical stressors. Students integrate curriculum concepts
(cultural diversity, developmental theory, legal/ethics, and
interpersonal theory) to plan and implement patient care. Students
attend to the maintenance, restoration, and promotion of basic human
needs. An introduction to the special needs of clients in critical care
situations is given. The course's strong laboratory focus enables
students to demonstrate competence in selected advanced nursing skills.
NUR 2423C - Nursing Process for Maternal/NewbornStudents
apply theories and skills from prerequisite courses to caring for
childbearing families. Optimum health care of the mother, her
significant other, and the newborn as it relates to the health of the
individual, family, and society is applied to the nursing process.
Focus is placed on the family unit as the foundation for fulfilling
basic human needs. Holistic care of the childbearing family is
emphasized. This course allows students to care for families
experiencing alterations in the normal childbearing process. Students
can develop competence in selected maternal and infant care skills.
NUR 2520C - Nursing Process for Mental HealthThis
course builds on mental health concepts and inter-personal skills
learned in previous classes. Students apply curriculum concepts to
multiple-aged clients experiencing an interruption of psychosocial
needs. Communication skills are refined. Students are taught to use
therapeutic problem solving as a method of intervention with clients in
any care setting. Clinical experiences are provided in mental health
acute care inpatient facilities, community mental health centers, and
selected community mental health agencies/support groups. Strong
laboratory experiences allow students to demonstrate competence in
selected mental health skills.
NUR 2943C - Nursing Process PracticumDuring
this course, students begin transitioning from student nurse to
graduate nurse. The first part of the course is in a seminar-like
atmosphere. Group and student led discussions are held regarding
current trends and issues in nursing and health care. Focus is placed
on the associate degree nurse's role in protecting client's rights,
leadership, promoting effective change and professional growth, and
career planning. The second part of the class helps students apply the
nursing process in a clinical setting. Students apply theoretical
knowledge and practical skills while caring for a group of patient.
Students are under the supervision of a nurse preceptor with guidance
from an instructor.
Support CoursesHUN 2202 - Human Nutrition and Diet TherapyThis
course focuses on the scientific principles of normal nutrition. Topics
include specific nutrients and nutritional requirements for different
age groups. The class also explores digestion, absorption, and
metabolism. A special focus is placed on applying nutritional
principles to physical health. The interdisciplinary team approach to
disease prevention and health restoration is also studied.
