Library Instruction and OrientationInformation fluency (bibliographic instruction) sessions in the library are geared as much as possible to the instructor's curriculum goals. Faculty members are encouraged to review the library's online Research Study Guides and contact a librarian at the reference desk to suggest content or Web changes that would make study guides more effective. Information fluency sessions are usually conducted in the library, but can "go on the road" to the professor's classroom. Two weeks notice is desired to schedule a librarian for classroom instruction, regardless of location. "Walk-in" classes are not an option due to seating and staffing constraints. Two weeks notice is required if faculty need to have information updated in related study guides and/or Library Web pages. Faculty members may call extension 2305 or complete the Library Instruction Request Form to schedule an instruction session at the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus. To reach to Oviedo Campus, faculty members should call extension 5062. Faculty members should submit a copy of their syllabus when requesting an instruction session. FeedbackFaculty members will be contacted a week or two after library instruction sessions are conducted to find out if the session and resources presented in it met curricular goals, as well as to learn of any student feedback from the session. Instructors are encouraged to respond frankly to help shape our instruction program to meet future needs. OrientationsLibrary orientations are basic information sessions where students receive a tour of the facility and an explanation of library services, obtain SCC ID cards with activation of library privileges; and receive a basic introduction to the library's electronic resources. Instruction in the use of library resources and research techniques is not included. Orientations are walkthrough tours and are generally conducted for students taking ESOL and/or adult high school classes. |
