Biography: General Study Guide This guide provides links to help you create a research strategy for General Biography. General Sources Sources Covering Americans Sources Covering British Representative Internet Links Suggested Databases On the Research Quick Start page, find Locate Periodical Articles in Online Databases Find and click LINCCWeb Online DatabasesLogon. On the "Advanced Search" screen, click the database name. A new browser window opens. Follow searching directions in individual databases. Biography Index(Wilson), which is not full text, locates biographical material from all Wilson databases. Because it is not full text we suggest that you will get more satisfactory results by searching Omnifile Full Text Mega Edition which includes full text indexing from 11 Wilson databases. Instructions for searching Biography Resource Center (Gale) - Dan Gilmartin's Classes - On the Research Quick Start page, at Locate Periodical Articles in Online Databases find and click LINCCWeb Online Databases.
- At Borrower ID, type the Borrower ID number located on your SCC Library ID card.
- At PIN, type your Personal Identification Number. Your default PIN is the last 4 digits of your Social Security number.
- Click the "Log on" button.
Name Search - At the Alphabetical Database List, locate and click Biography Resource Center (Gale)
- Click the "Connect to Database" button. Note: This opens another browser window.
- At Name Search, type the first name and last name in any order, or any part of the name.
- Click the "Search" button.
Other Types of Searches - Biographical Fact Searches for people based on one or more personal facts such as birth and death years and places, nationality, ethnicity, occupation, or gender.
- Advanced Search
Enables you to perform searches using name, keyword, source, full text, date of magazine publication, and document number as a search criteria. Results - In the results list of names (in alphabetical order), locate and click the person you are researching. If only one name is found that matches your criteria, the application will take you directly to the main tabbed results page for that name.
- After you select the name of a person, a tabbed results list will be displayed.
| Narrative Biographies | Lengthy biographies on the individual. | | Thumbnail Biographies | Brief biographies on the individual. | | Magazine Articles | Returns a results list of full-text articles written by or about the individual. | | Websites | Returns a results list of pre-selected websites, when available, highlighting the individual's life and works. | - Tabs may or may not display depending on the amount of content available on a specific person. (Note: If your search does not find any results for a specific data type, the tab will be "grayed out" and will not work.)
- After you click on an article, you can click Print or E-mail.
Exit - Another window opened when you connected to the database. Click the "x" in the upper right corner to close the new window and return to the “Connect to Database” screen.
- Click the “Alphabetical” button to return to the Alphabetized Database List.
