Citing CD-ROM Entries
1. CD-ROM Publications
Many publications on CD-ROM, diskette, or magnetic tape are issued as
books are - that is, without a plan to update or otherwise revise the work regularly.
Cite a non-periodical publication on CD-ROM, diskette, or magnetic tape as you would a
book, but add a description of the medium of publication. Since the information provider and the publisher are usually the same for such publications, no vendor's name
appears, and only one publication date is given. Include the following items on works
cited page:
- Author's name (if given). If only an editor, a compiler, or a translator is
identified, cite that person's name, followed by the appropriate abbreviation (ed.,
comp., trans.).
- Title of the publication (underlined)
- Name of the editor, compiler, or translator (if relevant)
- Publication medium (CD-ROM, Diskette, or Magnetic tape)
- Edition, release, or version (if relevant)
- Place of publication
- Name of publisher
- Date of publication
(If you cannot find some of this information, cite what
is available.)

The Oxford English Dictionary. 2nd ed. CD-ROM. New York:

If you are citing only a part of the work, state which part. Enclose the
title in quotation marks. If the source supplies page numbers, paragraph numbers, screen
numbers, or some other kind of section numbers, state their total.
Examples:
"Albatross." The Oxford English Dictionary. 2nd ed. CD-ROM.
Oxford: Oxford UP, 1992.
"Psychology." Encarta 1996. CD-ROM. Redmond:
Microsoft, 1996.
2. Periodicals on CD-ROM
Many periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers) and periodically
published reference works are published both in print and on CD-ROM as databases or as
parts of databases. To cite such a work, begin with the publication data for the printed
source or printed analogue, as identified in the CD-ROM publication. The typical entry
consists of the following items:
- Author's name (if given)
- Publication information for the printed source or printed analogue (including title and
date of print publication)
- Title of the database (underlined)
- Publication medium (CD-ROM)
- Name of the vendor (if relevant)
- Electronic publication date

is available.)
