Interior Design

Interior designers plan the space and furnish the interiors of residential homes and retail establishments, as well as health, hospitality and institutional facilities. Many interior designers specialize in a specific area. For example, some may concentrate in residential design, and others may further specialize by focusing on particular rooms, such as kitchens, baths, home offices and media rooms.

In accordance with a client's individual tastes, needs and budget, interior designers will:

  • Prepare drawings and/or use computer programs to design and layout specifications for non-load bearing interior construction.
  • Select furnishings such as furniture, floor coverings, window treatments, lighting fixtures, countertops, hardware, accessories, etc.
  • Coordinate colors, finishes and fabrics.
  • Design or select architectural details such as crown molding, built-in bookshelves and cabinets.
  • Schedule and supervise work being done by hired or outsourced business contractors.

Interior designers must design space to conform to federal, state and local laws, including building codes. Designs for public spaces must also meet accessibility standards for the disabled and elderly.
