Golf team helps celebrate SCC's Dream Cup Challenge

SCC's inaugural women's golf team, ranked third in the National Junior College Athletic Association, assisted golfers at the SCC Foundation's 25th annual Dream Cup Challenge, held April 14 at Tuscawilla Country Club.

Led by LPGA veteran and coach Christa Teno, the team gave the 33 foursomes advice at various holes on the course, including the hole-in-one contest for a 2009 Jaguar XF. SCC Women's Golf Team with Dr. E. Ann McGee at the Dream Cup Challenge.

Teno said she was grateful for the opportunity to showcase her team.

" It gives the girls real-world experience at meeting business people and introducing themselves," Teno said.

A highlight for the team came when top player Suzanne Ervin, 18, was awarded the Mack Blythe Outstanding Freshman Athlete of the Year Award, an annual presentation that recognizes students who excel on the field and in the classroom. Ervin, a business major, carries a 4.0 grade point average.

Ervin was the most valuable player at her high school in Schertz, Texas, when Coach Teno recruited her via e-mail. Ervin, who started playing golf when she was only 8, credits the coach for re-sparking her enthusiasm for the game.

"Coach has helped me improve so much," Ervin said.

After achieving her degree, Ervin hopes to either open a business in the golfing industry, or to teach professionally.

SCC's women's golf team is quickly making a name for itself, closing this year's regular season with six straight top 5 finishes. At the Bash at the Beach in Daytona Beach March 29-30, SCC golfers finished tied for fourth, topping nine four-year colleges. And overall, the team carries a 3.0 grade point average.

This is the first year the golf team has participated in SCC's annual tournament. The Dream Cup Challenge, along with the Dream Auction held in February, raised nearly $200,000 for SCC's areas of greatest need.
