Firefighter I and II - Minimum Fire Standards Program

The Minimum Fire Standards Program at SCC is widely regarded as one of the best in Florida. A firefighter functions to provide service to the community in preventing loss of life and property from natural and man made disasters. Firefighters must function in a broad spectrum of responsibilities ranging from public education to firefighting and emergency medical care. Graduates of SCC's Fire Academy will be able to perform these duties in a prompt, dependable, and safe manner.

Florida Requirements for the Professional Firefighter

According to Florida statues, a full time paid firefighter must be certified by the bureau of Fire Standards and Training, commonly known as Minimum Fire Standards. Requirements for this certification are:

  • High School Graduate or GED
  • 18 years of age at time of state certification exam
  • No convictions or significant misdemeanors or felonies
  • Be in good physical condition without limitations
  • Successfully complete the Fire Standards Course
SCC Fire Academy Requirements
  • High School Graduate or GED
  • 18 years of age
  • Complete College Placement Test (CPT)
  • Complete a physical examination from a licensed physician certifying ability to participate in continuous strenuous physical activity.
  • Attend an orientation program offered one moth prior to start of class
Minimum Fire Standards Course Description

Minimum Fire Standards prepares students for careers as state certified professional firefighters. The program consists of lecture and practical application that exceed the course hour requirements set by the state of Florida. Students will receive in depth instruction into the broad functions required for a fire fighter, including fire department communications, basic building construction, and live fire training. Included in the course is 40 hours of first responder medical training.

Length of Program: 450 hours (including 40 contact hours for First Responder)
Course Numbers: FFP 0021 - Firefighter I and II

Course Dates:

Day Course:

Spring: January - April
Fall: August - December
Hours: Monday - Thursday; 8:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m.

Evening Course:

Spring/Summer: January - June
Summer/Fall: June - December
Hours: Monday - Thursday; 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. Saturday 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
