Workshops - January 4
The three workshops offered on January 4 were well attended. Christine Stillings presented on Scholar Google, Bob Rapalje presented on Successful Strategies for Teaching Math, and Bobbi Lytle led a workshop on Gradekeeping with Excel.
New Faculty Program - January 21
Laura Ross stated the topic for the New Faculty Program will be on Student Support Services. Patry English, Dottie Paishon, Russ Mike, and Marylen Jennings have been invited to focus on issues that threaten student success and what teachers can do to help students or direct them to helpful resources.
Oviedo Coffee - January 27
Committee discussed and decided that we should have general conversation for the first Oviedo Coffee and share some things we are doing at the SLM campus including our Website.
Coffee Topics
Committee discussed having a specific topic periodically for the Faculty Coffees. Possible topics mentioned were study groups and the Faculty Forum on the Website.
Book Talk - Kite Runner
The Faculty Institute will partner with the Honors Program to encourage the campus to read the Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Then we can hold campus discussions in conjunction with Honor Students sometime in March.
Barbara Hunnicutt is going to check with the Film Committee regarding the possibility of doing a film one evening the same week. Christine Stillings will order more books for the Library. Laura Ross will ask the bookstore to stock some copies.
Dr. Ken Bain - April 15
Laura Ross advised that Dr. Ken Bain, author of What The Best College Teachers Do will be here on April 15 to conduct a workshop to discuss his book which is based on research he has done. It was suggested we order more copies of his book and have him sign them when he's here. The Committee discussed having a follow-up workshop to hear how this information would apply to our classrooms and campus. It was discussed how we would advertise for his visit by putting up posters, etc.
Marcia Roman suggested having benchmarks to talk about student engagement and student learning. Barbara Hunnicutt suggested having a discussion campus-wide.
Faculty Institute Forum
John Delgado advised that the Faculty Institute Forum has been completed and is now on the Website. You can go online to register and subscribe in order to view information, ask questions and receive replies. John will do a demonstration at the Oviedo Faculty Coffee on Thursday, January 27.
Professional Memberships
Jeff Smith asked about joining the Consortium with UCF. Laura Ross said it is on Dr. Wright's desk now. POD (Professional and Organizational Development Network) is another organization that we should join.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:10 am.
The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, February 25, 2005, 10:00-11:00 am.
