    Advisory Committee Meeting
    Minutes - February 25, 2005

    Members Present:

Susan Bell, Patricia Cason, John Delgado, Barbara Hunnicutt, Marcia Roman, Laura Ross, Jeff Smith, Christine Stillings, Susan Weinman

    Recorder: Verna Legg

    Oviedo Visit:

Laura Ross reported that the Oviedo Coffee was very well received with twenty people in attendance, and John Delgado demonstrated the new Faculty Institute Forum. John advised that he is working to get the Faculty Institute Web Site linked to the SCC Web Site. He is also going to talk with the Oviedo Faculty regarding a discussion of the Kite Runner on the Forum. Marcia Roman suggested that the Forum be put on the MySCC portal.

Susan Weinman asked if we could have a coffee for the Adult Education Department to bring awareness to the Faculty Institute and what it has to offer. The idea was well received, and the consensus was to also hold coffees for other departments as well on an informal basis.

    March Events:

Laura Ross advised of the Clicker Workshop which will be presented by Thomson Publishing on March 4, and the topic for the Faculty Coffee on March 9 will be Using Study Groups Effectively with Cheryl Cantwell as presenter.

The Committee discussed the Kite Runner discussion to be held on March 24 and the possibility of showing the movie, Kandahar. It was decided to look into having a movie/lunch combination, and Laura Ross said she will ask the Honors students if they have an interest in attending.

The Committee discussed and favorably decided to have the Faculty Coffees once a week instead of twice and to hold them on different days and times, so more Faculty members would have the opportunity to attend.

    April Events:

The Committee discussed Dr. Ken Bain's visit to the SLM Campus on April 15. Laura Ross advised that we now have two more copies of his book in the Faculty Institute Library. Books have also been ordered and received at the Bookstore.

Marcia Roman discussed sharing the CCSSE survey regarding student engagement. It benchmarks five indicators of teaching practices. SCC could look at data, which is available on the web site, and compare itself to similar institutions. The data may match up with what Dr. Bain has discovered in his fifteen years of research. The five indicators are:

    • Active and Collaborative Learning
    • Faculty-Student Interaction
    • Academic Challenge
    • Student Effort
    • Support for Learners
    Summer:

The Committee discussed possible summer activities. It was decided to make Dr. Bain's visit a 3-part event.

    • Dr. Bain's visit on April 15
    • Have a follow-up in May - Teaching and Learning at SCC: The Results of the CCSSE Data
    • Have a fall event - Making Changes in Your Classroom: Applying knowledge from Dr. Bain's Research and the CCSSE Data

The Committee discussed new committee members. It was decided to have a few carry-over members as well as some new members coming on board. If a member does not elect to continue next year, they need to email Laura Ross.

    Fall Classes For Credit

The Committee discussed what type of class would be beneficial to the Faculty in the fall. Barbara Hunnicutt expressed a desire to have training on "How To Conduct A Discussion."

    Technology and Faculty Institute

Laura Ross advised Oviedo has expressed a desire to have more workshops on their campus. Laura is looking into the possibility of broadcasting workshops from campus to campus. Dick Hamann will let us know what equipment we would need to purchase to have this capability.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:10 am.

The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, April 8, 2005, 10:00-11:00 am.
