- Introduction began at 1:08pm.We were excited to welcome Christine Broeker, the new Faculty Institute Manager. She feels as though this is her "Dream Job," and says [she] "is thrilled to be here and is looking forward to taking the Faculty Institute to the next level."
- In planning for after 2008, when the Title III Grant ends, Christine B. has established an SCC Foundation Program Account for the Faculty Institute. The benefit of this account is that funds will be matched. Funding may be used cover expenses such as materials, supplies, equipment, and speakers for the FI.
- "Clickers" update: The Faculty Institute has obtained one set of 30 "clickers!" The goal is to incorporate them into the majority of the Faculty Institute presentations as well as getting faculty comfortable with using this new technology. The software is set up in the Faculty Institute Library (T2-101B) on our new computer. We are also looking at getting this software set up in the T2 Classroom (T2-102). Christine B. has spoken with Wilma Hodges to establish one "clickers" training session a month as well as "Angel", training since "Angel" looks like it will replace WebCT in the near future. If you are interested in using the "clickers", please contact Christine B. at ext. 2755 or Lisa Hackett at ext. 2241.
- A WebCT site has been established for the Faculty Institute. This was designed to supplement and enhance FI workshops and seminars. Additional information will be distributed soon.
- Upcoming sessions: "World Languages in the Community College," is a live satellite video conference. This session will explore the issue of offering effective programs in world languages to enhance international understanding and to strengthen America's economic and security interests. The date for this event is Wednesday, November 15th, 2006, at 2:00pm. The location is SLM Campus, building A room 200. Also, we are proud to present Rachid Bendriss, who is a Fulbright Scholar and Assistant Director of UCF'S International Student Center, to speak on the topic: "A Comprehensive Approach to Campus Internationalization." The date for this event is, Monday, November 20th, 2006, and will be held at the Oviedo Campus in room OVIF-100 from 12:30-1:45pm. We are also very excited to present Dr. Richard Lyons, coordinator of the faculty development program at Indian River Community College, and the author of several books on teaching and learning including "Teaching College in an Age of Accountability," and "Adjunct's Guide to Success," He will present at SCC on Friday, January 26th, 2007 (location to be determined) from 1:00pm-3:00pm. His focus will be on accountability and student retention. Dr. Lyons was also kind enough to give us a free seat in an upcoming Webinar "Managing the Potential of your Adjunct Faculty." on Wednesday, December 6th, 2006. He also offered us a terrific discount on 10 seats for his 'Adjunct Success Online Program,' as well a 1 free seat in the course.
- Faculty Institute will host an Open House and in partnership with the SCC Library. It was discussed to be held in the main library on Thursday, January 4th, 2007 to include a tour of the Faculty Institute Library and Classroom. We would like to highlight some of the new technology such as the 'clickers.'
- Internationalization Advisory Committee: Frank has been working hard coordinating a team of faculty to implement SCC's commitment to Internationalization. He has also compiled a SCC Faculty Internationalization Survey. If you have any input or would like to join the committee, please contact Frank at ext. 2107.
- Ongoing Meetings: Faculty Institute Advisory Committee Meetings: It was discussed by committee members to have meetings on the first Friday of each month from 1:00pm-2:00pm., with Collegial Coffee's before the Advisory Committee Meetings. FI will also offer Brown Bag Sessions to keep faculty up to date on current teaching and learning topics and issues. Internationalization Advisory Committee meetings will also continue.
- Faculty Institute Spring Term: We have many events planned and are looking for suggestions. Please see the attached tentative agenda and feel free to let Christine B. know if you have any new ideas.
- Mission Statement/Vision Statement: The Faculty Institute has a mission statement but we are in need of a vision statement. We definitely want a statement that reflects our ideas and goals for the future of the Faculty Institute, beyond 2008. It was discussed to look at adapting previously developed statements from other colleges and universities (with possible revisions). Please, if you have any suggestions or ideas, contact Christine B. or Lisa and share them with us. The proposal will be emailed to all FI Advisory members for input.
- Meeting was adjourned at 1:51pm.
