    Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes
    January 17, 2006

Members Present: Susan Bell, Nana Robertson, Laura Ross, and Christine Stillings

    Recorder: Yeok Eng Wendt

The Committee reviewed two upcoming events:
    1. "Salzburg Seminar, Globalization, and the Community College Curriculum" was scheduled for Wed, Jan. 18 in SLM S-210. This was an encore presentation and it was broadcast to the Oviedo Campus. Also, this presentation was video-taped, to allow interested faculty members to view the presentation at his/her leisure time.
    2. On Fri, Jan. 20, Dr. Alejandro Gallard, an associate professor at Florida State University, was on campus to give a presentation entitled, "Multi-Cultural Issues Regarding Gender, Class, and Race in the Classroom." This event was also videotaped.
    Solicitation of New Committee Members:

The Committee was informed that two of its current members, Maureen Tremel and Christine Broeker, would no longer be able to serve because of other obligations. It was decided that the Faculty Institute would send out a campuswide e-mail to solicit two faculty members as substitutes. Also, depending upon the responses, the Faculty Institute may choose to appoint additional members on the current Advisory Committee. The Faculty Institute will try to schedule Advisory Committee meetings on Fridays after 11 a.m.
    Survey:

Ross reminded the Committee that the Faculty Institute conducted a survey in the Fall 2004, and that it was time to schedule another survey. The new survey would help the Committee to evaluate past activities and to conduct a needs assessment. Last year, a total of about 900 faculty members attended the various FI activities.

    Website:

Frank Albritton is currently working with CTS on the FI Web site. The Web site will link to the SCC site and the Sign-me up Calendar. Members with creative ideas for the FI Web site should forward to Ross for consideration. Committee members mentioned that information was sometimes given too quickly at WebCT workshops, and faculty were not able to understand and/or retain the material. The Committee discussed that it would be helpful to have a class on instructions and another on lab, and provide plenty of handouts and manuals.
    Others:

    1. Endowed Chairs
The Committee was reminded to urge others to recommend deserving faculty members for the Endowed Teaching Chair Awards; the deadline was Jan 20.
    2. Faculty Center, University of Central Florida
Ross mentioned that the Faculty Center at the University of Central Florida offers a consultation service to its faculty. This faculty service facilitates classroom observations and provides helpful and confidential feedback directly to the class instructor. If implemented at SCC, this service would need to be designed carefully, but the Committee thought it was worth researching.

The meeting adjourned promptly at 4 p.m.
