Writing Contests
If you are a Seminole Community College student in good standing, you have the opportunity to win money and scholarships for your class writings and creative adventures.
Every spring the
SCC English Department sponsors or co-sponsors writing competitions. You can get applications and further information in January by calling Ms. Cassandra Hernandez, English Department Secretary, at 407.708.2060. Or, you may pick up them up at her
office in E-107. Winners are announced in March.
Open Doors
Open Doors is an annual short story writing competition. Applicants must be enrolled at SCC for at least one class, and entries must not exceed 500 words. Each person can
submit up to three entries. All place winners will receive cash awards and one 3-credit hour scholarship each. Call Bill Schmidt at 407.708.2061 for further information.

Poetry Competition
Underwritten by
poet Gwendolyn Brooks, this annual poetry competition in honor of SCC English instructor, Dr. Stephen Caldwell Wright, is open to SCC students who are enrolled in at least one class at SCC. All winners receive cash awards and one 3-credit hour

English Scholarships
SCC English Department awards several scholarships to students who excel in composition classes. Students must be enrolled at SCC, in good
academic standing, and have completed at least one college credit English class at SCC. Applicants write a 500 word essay and submit a portfolio with three papers written for English classes. Call Ann Laskowski at 407.708.2068 for more information.
English I Research Paper Competition
This competition honors students who have written extraordinary research papers that received at least a C in an English I class at SCC. Students must be enrolled at SCC and in good academic standing.
