EMT-B Enrollment ProceduresThe Emergency Medical Technician - Basic certificate is a limited access program. Enrollment in the EMT-B and the Paramedic programs require the submission of the Emergency Medical Services Programs application to the Fire Science / EMS office, and application to the college. Students must return the completed EMS application to the Fire Science/EMS office in Building K room 108. With the EMS application, students must submit proof of age (18 years of age minimum) and proof of High School diploma or GED. Upon completion of the application and submission of required documentation, the student will be given a course registration form. Only after receiving the course registration form will the student be allowed to register into the EMT course. Students will register for all three EMT classes, Emergency Medical Technician, EMT Laboratory, EMT Clinical (EMS 1119, EMS 1119L, EMS 1431 ). These classes have no course prerequisites, however the CPT Equivalent Test (Computerized Placement Test) is required to be completed by the midterm examination during the course. Guidance counselors will advise the student about the necessary remediation courses necessary prior to applying to the paramedic program. These remediation courses will not have to be completed during the EMT course. The EMT lecture and EMT Laboratory classes include a minimum of eight hours of lecture and three hours of lab per week. The EMT clinical class will have students working minimum of 32 hours in an emergency department, and a minimum of 24 hours of field (Rescue) clinical hours. Class will be held Monday through Thursday from 9:30 am - 1:30 pm for the day class, 6:00 pm -10:00 pm for the evening class. Students should be prepared to attend all four days or evenings. These classes are on a rotating schedule where laboratory and lecture may rotate through the week. EMT Practicum (clinical) hours will be scheduled by the student during class, and scheduled when the student is not in class or laboratory. Professional liability insurance is required for both EMT and Paramedic students and is included in the tuition costs. SCC does not provide medical insurance for the student. Medical insurance is the responsibility of the student and not the college. Special RequirementsThe EMT course has co-requisite requirements (EMS 1119, EMS 1119L, EMS 1401). Failure to successfully complete any one of the co-requisite courses will result in the student being withdrawn from all of the EMT courses (EMS). A minimum grade of "C" (80 percent) must be achieved in all EMS courses to meet program and graduation requirements. If a student receives a failing grade for any EMS course they will subsequently receive a Withdraw (W) for the co-requisite requirements. Upon return or acceptance into the EMS Program the student must re-register into all three co-requisite courses. |
