Course Substitutions

Waivers or substitutions to established graduation requirements may be requested by students with disabilities in written petitions made through the Admissions and Graduation Committee. The disability documentation provided must show that the personandrsquo;s failure to meet the graduation requirement does not constitute a fundamental alteration in the nature of the program.

For students to be provided a substitution for a requirement for admission or graduation on the basis of Florida Statute 240.153 or 1987:

  1. The student must first be diagnosed as having a disability as defined by Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, and registered with Disability Support Services.
  2. Then, while being provided with appropriate accommodations through DSS, the student must attempt to complete the requirement and demonstrate an inability to do so.
  3. If inability is demonstrated, the student will submit a petition to the Admissions and Graduation Committee for appropriate action.
  4. After a student is granted the right of substitution and completes the substitution course, the grade in the original course will not be used in computing the studentandrsquo;s grade point average. This removed grade will not be counted as one of the "forgiveness policy" grades to which every student is entitled.

The Admissions and Graduation Committee shall review the studentandrsquo;s case and determine whether substitution for the requirement is warranted. If it is determined that a substitution is warranted, the committee will notify the student and provide the list of possible substitutions to satisfy the requirement. The College shall determine whether a substitution constitutes a "fundamental alteration in the nature of the program."
