    Full text articles, research and Web sites on minorities and language issues, compiled by the Univ. of Southern California's Center for Multilingual Multicultural Research
  • CREDE (Center for Research on Education, Diversity and Excellence)
    Formerly known as the National Center for Research on Cultural Diversity and Second Language Learning. Includes reports and information on education initiatives relevant to multicultural diversity. From UC Santa Cruz.
  • Diversity Database
    Searchable database with definitions, resources, bibliographies and more. From Univ. of Maryland.
  • Multicultural Media
    An extensive online catalog of videos, music CD's and books on historic and contemporary ethnic music and dance from all over the world.
African American Web sites

This list includes selected African American Web resources useful for academic research and information purposes. Only Web sites that are reflective of African American realities were considered; sites that are exclusively African in origin or focus are only rarely included. Recommended Web sites listed below were evaluated for breadth, perceived authority, stability, usefulness and accuracy.

  • African American Web Connection
    Good selection of mostly popular Web pages on topics such as art, authors, history and other index sites; also includes annotated listings for online periodicals, resources for children and a directory of churches.
  • Africana.com
    Scholarly portal with news, articles, information and services both free online and for subscription fees. Main channels include Worldview, Lifestyle, Fast Track, Heritage, Art Scene and Homefront. There are numerous advertisements for products, books, CD-ROM's and network services. Includes music, book and movie reviews. According to the site, their mission is to gather together authoritative information on the African diaspora in an entertaining way. Includes search engine.
  • Black Studies
    Huge, one-page list of links organized by very specific topics. Be prepared if you want to print out the list, as it is  more than 75 pages long. From City College Libraries, CUNY. Includes some annotations.
  • Black Voices.com
    Now called AOL Black Voices; attractive portal offers chat clubs, member searches, Afrocentric greeting cards, member photos, and other miscellaneous services. Content is a bit buried on this site, but covers the main topics of Black news today, careers, sports, entertainment, book reviews, cars and an events search. One unique and entertaining feature is BVTV, or brief streaming video roving reporter interviews of Chicagoans on politics, history and leisure topics. Includes archived stories and a search engine.
  • BlackQuest: Black History Quest
    One component of the larger, somewhat commercial BlackQuest Web site is a partially annotated list of links leads to a wide variety of Web sites, some of which touch on various aspects of African American history. Others focus on contemporary African American art, current Web sites on African countries and issues, "multicultural medicine," and a hodge podge of other topics.
American Indian Web sites

This list includes selected American Indian Web resources useful for academic research and information purposes. Only Web sites that are reflective of American Indian/Native American realities were considered; sites that are exclusively "New Age" or otherwise non-native in origin or focus are not included. Recommended Web sites listed below were evaluated for breadth, perceived authority, stability, usefulness and accuracy.

  • Native American Legal Resources
    Compilation of links to full-text documents such as relevant case law, constitutions of specific tribes and nations, treaties, and other resources. Also provides links to government agencies such as the BIA, the US Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, a link to the developing Native American Constitution and Law Digitization Project and more.   • Native American Sites
    One of the best sources for locating Web sites developed by individual American Indian nations and other native peoples, as well as native information on many topics. Includes useful lists of video sources and media production companies, and sections on language and the issue of "mascots." By Lisa Mitten, formerly a bibliographer and librarian at the University of Pittsburgh.
  • Native Americans: American Studies A brief but useful listing of sites pertaining to American Indian religions, spirituality and related traditions. Part of the larger Virtual Religion Index/American Studies religion site at Rutgers. Despite its brevity, it's one of the few resources that has a focus on American Indian religions.
  • NativeNet
    "Dedicated to protecting and defending Mother Earth and the rights of indigenous peoples," NativeNet has long sponsored a number of well-known Internet discussion lists (such as Native-L, NAT-Lang, NAT-Chat and others), whose threads have been archived at this site. Also includes links organized by geography and topic.
  • Teaching Indigenous Languages
    Collection of full-text scholarly articles, bibliographies and information on the teaching and revitalizing of indigenous languages. Includes teaching models, details on the status of various American Indian languages, and rationales for keeping endangered languages alive. Much social and political information relevant to language maintenance is also included. Information on academic conferences, and links to relevant Web sites elsewhere are also provided. Asian American Web sites

This list includes selected Asian American Web resources useful for academic research and information purposes. Only Web sites that are reflective of Asian American realities were considered; sites that are exclusively Asian in origin or focus are only rarely included.   • Asian Pacific American Politics
    Sponsored by the American Political Science Association's section on Race, Ethnicity and Politics, this site includes a brief bibliography of noteworthy books, and selected links to Asian American studies programs and centers, relevant associations and miscellaneous sites of interest.
  • Hmong Net
    Huge and well-organized collection of Hmong resources, news and information, including publications, human rights information, dictionaries, art and handicrafts, history and culture, and much more.
  • Little Saigon Net
    Organizes information and Web links under categories such as community, media, entertainment and people. Includes links to downloadable fonts and VNI software, radio links, a bookstore and many other features. In English and in Vietnamese.
  • Southeast Asian Archive
    From the UC Irvine Libraries, this site organizes library materials, guides, digital collections and Web links pertaining to Southeast Asians, including Cambodian, Hmong, Lao and Vietnamese resources.
  • Voice of the Shuttle: Asian American
    Unannotated list of miscellaneous Asian American links, including e-journals, research guides and bibliographies.
U.S. Latino Web sites

This list includes Chicano/Mexican American, Puerto Rican and Cuban American Web resources, as well as sites that pertain to Salvadorans, Dominicans, Colombians, Guatemalans and other Latinos residing in the US. Only Web sites that are reflective of U.S. Latino realities were considered; sites that are exclusively Latin American in focus are not included. Recommended Web sites listed below were evaluated for breadth, perceived authority, stability, usefulness and accuracy.

  • AfroCubaWeb
    Very full listing of news items and current events relevant to Afro-Cuban issues of all kinds, with a focus on the arts, music, religion, literature and folklore. Includes information on research trips to Cuba, visiting Cuban scholars, workshops, conferences and festivals. In English; includes search engine.
  • Biografias y vidas
    This new Web site provides biographical information in Spanish on thousands of individuals worldwide, ranging from Aristotle to David Beckham. Good coverage of people from the Spanish-speaking world, including the U.S. Includes illustrations.
  • HispanicBusiness.com
    Formerly called HispanicBiz, this Web site now bills itself as HispanicBusiness.com. Large meta-site with a business focus. Includes helpful links to U.S. and Latin American financial news, job databases, demographic and business-related facts about U.S. Latinos, resources and publications on technology, networking, education and community resources. Focus is general U.S. Latino and Latin American. Also includes selected full text articles from Hispanic Business Magazine. In English (some links in Spanish, Portuguese); no search engine.
  • Hispanic Network Magazine
    A career and employment-focused site that includes resources such as Latino-related employment fairs, lists of relevant conferences and their dates, and other career information. It does not include online magazine articles, though subscription information is posted.
  • Yahoo en espanol
    Spanish-language version of Yahoo that focuses on classification and retrieval of Web sites written in Spanish, with a special focus on Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Spain, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela. In Spanish.
LGBT Websites

This list includes selected LGBT Web resources useful for academic research and information purposes. Only Web sites that are relevant to LGBT research and information needs were considered. Recommended Web sites listed below were evaluated for breadth, perceived authority, stability, usefulness and accuracy.

  • Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD)
    Web site of this well-known advocacy group provides national and local organization information, a news center with many articles and notices organized by geographical region, descriptions of GLAAD projects, media releases and other helpful materials. Includes search engine. Includes many publications, some of whose full-text articles are available online.
  • National Consortium of Directors of LGBT Resources in Higher Education
    Useful links to research libraries with strong LGBT collections and archives, a good annotated list of online journals and e-zines, queer studies programs across the country, and useful syllabi, bibliographies and other resources.
  • National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF)
    Web site of this important politically-oriented organization includes press releases and background essays on topics of concern, including affirmative action, domestic partnerships, hate crimes, health, transgender issues, racial justice, and many more. Also includes NGLTF publications, many of which are available in PDF format on the Web site, plus downloadable "issue maps" (which document state by state issues such as hate crime legislation), opinions, and speeches. Highly recommended.
  • !OutProud!
    National Coalition for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Youth. Includes chat groups, news items, directories and many educational resources, such as facts, statistics, articles and other materials in support GLBT issues that can be used by teens in their schools and communities.
  • Transgender Forum
    Includes resources, information exchange, community support. Some resources by subscription only.
