Freaks and Geeks, SCC's annual gaming event, set for October 26

SCC's Eighth annual Freaks and Geeks, a gaming competition and expo, will take place Friday, Oct. 26, beginning at 6 p.m. at SCC's Heathrow Economic Development Center.

Freaks and Geeks, which is hosted by SCC's Digital Media along with the Network Technology program, will include an expo for students to meet and network with industry professionals; guest speakers who will provide demonstrations and speak to students on topics of interest; and the highly-anticipated design and gaming competitions.

The event will also include a student digital art show; vendors; workshops; and for the first time, a digital photography live shoot competition.

Freaks and Geeks started out with an enthusiastic professor and a few students who wanted to play LAN games after midterms. Since then, it has grown into what is now a community event. Last year more than 150 students competed.

"Freaks and Geeks allows students to speak and learn from professionals within Central Florida's digital media field," said Michael Kappers, professor and program manager for SCC's Digital Media Program. "Our industry partners give students exclusive insight on breaking in to the digital media field."

Previous industry partners have included: Disney Feature Animation, EA-Tiburon, UCF's Digital Media Program, local print shops, graphic designers, storyboard artists, advertising agencies, Bright House Networks, Microsoft and the Digital Media Alliance Florida. This year's guest list will be announced prior to the event.

This is the first time the expo has been held at SCC's Heathrow Center, the new home for the College's digital arts and construction programs. The Center is at 1055 AAA Drive.
