Security OverviewSeminole Community College (SCC) provides valuable technological support to educational activities and administrative functions. These resources, including computing systems and software, as well as internal and external data, voice, and video networks, are relational and shared resources. To preserve them for the common good, the College expects all users, including students, faculty, staff, administrators, other employees, and members of the general public using SCC information technology resources to comply in all respects to institutional and external standards for their appropriate use. The purpose of security is to prevent unauthorized person(s) from gaining access to computer resources and to allow legitimate users access to those computer resources, such as files, data and programs, which they are authorized to use. The files, data and programs of the computer systems are valuable assets of the College and must be protected from unauthorized modification, destruction or disclosure. In order to protect the security and integrity of the College network and its data, The Computing and Telecommunications Services Department (CTS) regulates access to computer systems in two ways. First, CTS controls access to the computer systems themselves (system access control). Second, the security administrator for PeopleSoft applications (Financials and HR/Student Administration) controls access to each application (application access control). System access control refers to regulating the access to the computing power of the system. This means that individuals are not allowed to use the system until they have identified themselves to the system by logging in with a valid login ID/password. Access to the system does not imply use of all the system's resources, but only those that are authorized. For example, if a user logs-in to the network, it does not mean the user can use every application or every feature of a given application. Application access control refers to regulating the access to the individual components of an application. PeopleSoft online security is used to control who can access the PeopleSoft application, what functions they can perform, and what business data they may view or manipulate. This means that individuals are not allowed to use the application until they have identified themselves by logging in with an application identifier, and the log-in defines what components the user may access. Similar to system access, access to PeopleSoft does not imply use of all the components within the application. |
