Speakers Bureau - Employee FAQs

What is the SCC Speakers' Bureau?
The SCC Speakers' Bureau is a resource for community organizations and groups that allows them to request guest speakers for various meetings and events. The objective of the Bureau is to expose the Seminole County community to SCC faculty and staff in an educational environment where the speaker can share information and experiences regarding his/her field of expertise, hobbies and talents, and display the scope and quality of services SCC offers, essentially acting as an "ambassador" for the College. Speakers will also earn professional development credit for their time.
Who handles scheduling?
Once you have committed to participate in the SCC Speakers Bureau, the Media and Public Relations (MPR) office will add your name to its database. Based on your field of expertise and availability, MPR will schedule your speaking opportunities as they arise. MPR will contact you with the details (date, time, location, etc.) of your presentation request and confirm all speaking engagements with the host site.
How often will I be required to speak?
As often as you'd like. Since the Speakers Bureau will only schedule presentations based on requests, you will only be committed to speak once MPR has confirmed your availability.
What type of presentation is expected?
We ask that your presentation last 20 to 30 minutes and be interactive. When speaking to students it is appropriate to use a lesson (tailored for the specific age group) similar to one you would use at SCC. When speaking to a community group you may also utilize a lesson or speak, in more general terms, about your field of expertise.
How do I earn professional development credit?
You will earn one professional development credit for each hour of presentation time and an additional hour of credit for preparation. Your professional development credits will be logged by the Media and Public Relations Office according to your speaking schedule and reported monthly to Human Resources.
