The Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Exam

What is the BCLS Exam?

The BCLS Exam measures your competency in life-saving cardiac life support and resuscitation techniques. The National Resuscitation Council controls the exam content.

What is the exam content?

Exam content focuses on:

  • One-rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR);
  • Two-rescuer CPR;
  • Foreign Body airway obstruction (FBAO) for conscious adults;
  • FBAO for unconscious adults;
  • Infant CPR; and
  • Infant FBAO.

Why is this an employment requirement for some agencies?

As a dispatcher, you may have to give CPR and first aid instructions to a caller. It is critical to know the techniques to save a victim's life. Many employers use the BCLS certification as a credential toward your life-saving knowledge and skills.
