Scholarships

2008-09 Early Childhood Education Scholarship

Through the early learning coalitions of Seminole and Orange Counties, scholarships are offered through SCC intended to assist teachers or those seeking teaching positions in the early childhood education field to attain their CDA or A.S. degree in early childhood education. Scholarships are limited and will not exceed $500 per semester for registration fees. Additional monetary support is provided for books as well.

Requirements:

Applicants must provide evidence of:

  • Age; applicants must me at least 18 years old;
  • A high school diploma or GED;
  • At least one year of experience in working with young children in a structured setting;
  • Being employed by an ELCS-funded center or family home; and
  • Completion of 40 hours (30 hours family) of mandatory DCF training.

Additionally, applicants must:

  • Attend Seminole Community College;
  • Submit three letters of recommendation (two professional references and one personal); and
  • Submit a signed Candidate Scholarship Agreement.
Further requirements:

A.S. Degree StudentsVocational CDA Students
  • Complete the CPT or present ACT/SAT scores;
  • Pass any necessary remedial classes; and
  • Answer the following essay questions (500 words maximum):
    • Why did you choose a career in early childhood education?
    • How will you use the knowledge and skills gained with an A.S. degree in early childhood or a CDA to work with young children?
  • Score a 6 or better on the TABE (vocational CDA);
  • Attend 15 hours of each vocational CDA course;and
  • Write a statement on why it is important for teachers to have additional education.

Selection Priorities

Priority will be given to:

  • Applicants that received this scholarship during previous semesters; and
  • Applicants holding at least a 2.5 GPA.
