The program prepares students for employment with young children from birth through age eight in childcare centers, preschools, Head Start and Pre-K programs. This program is designed to provide classroom and practical experience for teachers of young children to meet the emotional, social, intellectual and physical needs of children. Students will participate in an early childhood classroom setting as a part of their study. This program meets DCF requirements for a CDA Equivalency for the state of Florida.

Applicants must:

  • apply and be accepted to Seminole Community College;
  • be 18 years of age, or older, when beginning the program;
  • must have a high school diploma or GED;
  • complete the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). TABE scores of Reading 9, Language 9, and Math 9 must be met prior to program completion;
  • 480 hours of work with children in a childcare setting must be documented by completion of program;
  • ESOL students must have successfully completed the intermediate level prior to enrolling in the program.

Major Courses
HEV0111Child Growth and Development
This course focuses on the development of children 0-8 years of age. The theories of child development are introduced and discussed to acquaint the student with the importance of healthy growth and development childcare practices. Students will be introduced to typical stages of development through the theorist work and how to apply this information to children in their care. In addition to class meetings, this course requires practicum hours in a childcare facility.

HEV0115DCF 30-Hour Center Based State Mandated Training Modules
Center-based course. Part one: 20-hour training - all childcare personnel employed before October 1, 1992, except volunteers or substitutes who work less than 40 hours a month, must complete the HRS approved 20-clock-hour introductory child care training course provided by qualified trainers and approved by the training coordinating agency. Part two: 10-hour training - Behavior Observation and Screening (BOSM). This course has been developed to teach basic observation and screening principles to child care providers. NOTE: Within a year of completing the DCF 30-Hour Center-Based State Mandated Training Modules, students will need to complete an additional 10 hours to complete the Florida state requirement of 40 hours of mandated training. Completion of a developmentally appropriate practice course (DAP) for the age group or specialization that they work in is required. (DAP courses offered: HEV 0090, HEV 0091, HEV 0092 and HEV 0094.)

HEV0135Creative Expressions for Young Children
The focus of this course is the development of a classroom environment that fosters creative expression implemented by an adult who encourages the expression through process-oriented activities. Students will plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities that support social, emotional and physical expression through art, music, dramatic play, and block activities. Students will learn to promote sensory integration and perceptual skills as children progress through the stages of creative development. In addition to class meetings, this course requires practicum hours in a childcare facility. Lab fee required.

This course focuses on the organization and implementation of developmentally appropriate equipment and materials in a learning environment. Students are taught how to equip, maintain, and plan activities in a learning environment. Specific attention is given to class management by materials and activities in learning environments. In addition to class meetings, this course requires practicum hours in a childcare facility. Lab fee required.

This course provides and overview of early math and science experiences in early childhood programs for children 3-6 years of age. The student will present an organized, sequential approach to creating a developmentally appropriate math and science curriculum for preschool children. This course is designed to follow the guidelines and standards of NAEYC. In addition to class meetings, this course requires practicum hours in a childcare facility.

This course will provide an overview of curriculum models for infants through preschool children in early childhood education. Caregiving responsibilities within models of early childhood programs are presented. Students will be able to utilize teaching strategies appropriate to their curriculum goals as well as implement long and short-range curriculum goals.
