English Language Institute

The English Language Institute Program (ELI) is an intensive language program for international students whose native language is not English. This noncredit program focuses on improving English skills and prepares students to continue education at the college level. This program is available for students who are age 16 or older in the United States on student visas. The cost is US$2,800 (this amount is subject to change) for a complete 15-week term, which is required to complete each level.

Students at the beginning levels of ELI (Fundamentals I and Fundamentals II) study with resident adult education ESOL students for approximately 15 of their total hours in the program. During this time, strategies for learning include the study of language needed for life and work skills in the United States. The remaining hours are focused on academic communication skills.

Intermediate and advanced levels study 12 hours each week in community college English for Academic Purposes with EAP students. They also study selected topics that vary from term to term, such as American language, culture and vocabulary. At least three hours are spent in a language lab each week.

Individual classes for English Language Institute students are provided based on enrollment. Lower-level students study only at the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus. At the upper levels, some courses are offered at the Oviedo Campus; however, students studying at Oviedo two or three days a week also have to take courses that are offered only at the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses are community college level. EAP courses have pre- and corequisites based on placement and assessment of proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and grammar.
