Adult High School (AHS)

Mission Statement - The mission of the Seminole Community College Adult High School is to provide a personalized education that stresses the competencies students need to achieve future educational and employment goals.

Placement - Students are placed in AHS according to the reading, language and math scores they achieve on the TABE. A student's placement will be based upon the following criteria:

  1. Students with scores at or above a 9.0 are eligible for full admission without restrictions.
  2. Students with scores between 6.0 and 8.9 are eligible to enroll in Intensive Math, Intensive Reading and/or Intensive Language Arts based on remedial needs. 
  3. Students with scores between 6.0 and 8.9 in one area only can enroll in additional AHS courses, pending counseling, advising and director approval.

Students who do not meet the TABE requirements are eligible to enroll in Adult Basic Education. Students entering AHS are required to attend an initial orientation session. The orientation session provides students with the following opportunities:

  1. To discuss educational plans and have their questions answered in regards to concerns they may have; 
  2. To learn about Seminole Community College rules, regulations and services offered; and 
  3. To complete various forms for registration and register for their first term of classes.

Course Requirements - Students must earn 24 credits to graduate. Most credits earned at an accredited secondary school may be transferred and applied to the credit requirement.

All credits must be verified with a transcript or other evidence deemed acceptable by the College.

Credits may be granted for service schools, selected courses by special examination and correspondence courses at the discretion of the Director of Office of Enrollment Services. Enrollment in these courses does not apply toward calculation of full-time status.

Grading System - Letter grades are used to indicate the quality of work achieved by the student.

No credit will be given for courses in which a grade of less than D is earned.

A - Excellent
B - Good
C - Average
D - Below Average
F - Failing
W - Withdrawal
I - Incomplete
NG - No Grade
P - Passing
SP - Satisfactory Progress
N - No Credit

Honors Recognition - Adult High School students taking three or more credits a term will be eligible for academic recognition if the appropriate averages are maintained for the Dean's or A-B Honor Roll list.

Dean's List: Students with a GPA of 3.5 - 4.0 on all work accomplished in the given semester.

A-B Honor Roll: Students with a 3.0 - 3.49 on all work accomplished in the given semester. Students who have earned the required GPA will receive, by mail, a letter signed by the Dean of Adult Education.

Honors Diploma - Adult High School students who have attended Seminole Community College-AHS for at least two terms and completed at least six credits are eligible for academic recognition at graduation. The honors are recorded on the student's diploma. The standards are those of the College, with the grade point average to be calculated based on Seminole Community College work only. Students who did not meet the residency requirement but whose cumulative GPA achieved the standards of the Community College are also eligible to receive that recognition.

Grade Point Average Honors
GPA 3.2 - 3.49 (with honors)
GPA 3.5 - 3.79 (with high honors)
GPA 3.8 - 4.0 (with highest honors)

The student's status as an honor graduate of the Adult High School will also be reflected on the permanent transcripts generated by Seminole Community College.

Note: A grade of I is assigned to a student who does not finish the classwork on schedule. A student who receives an I grade must complete the coursework with the instructor during the first 30 college days of the following term; otherwise, any I grade will automatically become an F. In extenuating circumstances, the instructor may grant an extension of the time for the removal of the grade of I and shall notify the director of Enrollment Services and Technology that such extension has been granted.

Graduation Requirements - To receive a diploma, students must complete the following general requirements:

  1. Earn a minimum of 24 credits; 
  2. Satisfy all requirements as specified under Course Requirements; 
  3. Earn a minimum of two full credits in the Adult High School, including the final credit; 
  4. Pass the High School Competency Test (HSCT) or the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) to be eligible for a regular diploma. These tests are administered several times each year; 
  5. Discharge all financial obligations to Seminole Community College; and 
  6. File an application for graduation to receive a diploma.

Diplomas will be forwarded to students, provided they have filed an application.
