Secondary Studies for AdultsAdult Basic Education (ABE)The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program provides noncredit instruction in the basic reading, math, communication, life skills and work-ready skills necessary for successful employment and citizenship. ABE also prepares students to enroll in GED or adult high school courses. Eligibility Requirements - Classes are offered for persons 16 years of age or older, who score below the ninth-grade level on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) and who have left the public school system. Program Design - Each student completes an intake interview and the TABE. An individualized study plan is then developed with the student. Instruction is offered during the day and evening at SCC's Sanford/Lake Mary, Oviedo and Altamonte Springs Campuses, as well as at numerous outreach study sites located throughout Seminole County. Students in many ABE classes use computer-assisted, audio and video learning materials designed to enhance the learning experience. Four levels of instruction are offered in each of the subject areas, and students can advance through each level at their own pace. Progress through the levels is measured by approved standardized tests or documentation of mastery of skills. Any student seeking admission into the ABE/GED Program, who has been expelled or is being recommended for expulsion from Seminole County Public Schools, will not be accepted for admission until the expulsion order has expired. Students who successfully complete a minimum of one term at the EXCEL Program are eligible for admission. Students may petition a wavier through the College's Admissions and Graduate Committee. Fees - ABE classes are offered free of charge for eligible adult students. Registration - Students who wish to enroll in classes on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus begin their registration and counseling in the Adult Education Student Services office in room 113, Building B. They will be scheduled for classes at times that best meet their needs, as well as for classes at the Oviedo and Altamonte Springs Campuses. Students may register for off-campus classes in the classroom during regular class hours. Contact the ABE/GED Department Office in Building B, Room 224, for class schedules and locations. Eligibility Requirements - Credit classes are offered for persons 16 years of age or older whose education was interrupted before they were able to complete high school. Students who wish to transfer directly from a high school must show proof of withdrawal from the previous high school attended. Students must also submit an official sealed transcript of all high school credits attempted. Appointments for admission testing and orientation will be scheduled at the time of application. Students who have not passed the FCAT must take the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). Students may petition for a waiver through the College's Admissions and Graduate Committee. |
