Thank You

Many thanks to the Board members for agreeing to attend the high school awards ceremonies and present the District Board of Trustee Scholarships. We appreciate the dedication of your days…and your nights to the College!

Also, thanks to each of you for participating in Commencement on May 2nd. According to Linda, we will be at full force that evening with all five Board members attending. We will have our usual dinner at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Center with our Distinguished Graduate, Vallie Piloian, and representatives of the Faculty Senate, student organizations, Career Professionals Council, and FACC. Also, just a reminder that GED Graduation is April 30; Adult High School Graduation is May 1.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Dede Schaffner who will receive The Success Award from Success In Seminole on April 24th. This is only the fourth time that this award has been given. Dede is being recognized for "outstanding personal business achievement and community service." Specifically, Dede is being honored as an "advocate for tomorrow's workforce."

Congratulations to Dr. Stephen Caldwell Wright who was honored by the National Council on Black American Affairs at their annual meeting held in Dallas in conjunction with the American Association of Community Colleges Conference. Dr. Wright received the Leadership Award from NCBAA.
Congratulations to Dean Elnora Gilchrist who will receive the Dr. John T. Washington Community Service Award from UCF's College of Arts and Sciences African American Studies Program this Friday. Elnora is being recognized for her exemplary community service.

African American Cultural Forum

Congratulations to our African American Cultural Forum for their success at the 28th Annual Florida African American Student Association spring state conference. As you saw from the presentation, our students were selected as the Best Black Student Union/African American Student Association in the state. What a great achievement! We are very proud of them and of their advisors, Diana Dillon and Lillie Gibson.

Honors Students

SCC Honors students, Scott Nash, Tommy McWilliams, Courtney Nielsen and Shannon Wight, just returned from the Southern Regional Honors Collegiate Conference held in Greensboro, North Carolina. They were accompanied by their advisor, Beverly Bailey.

Softball Update

The first NJCAA National Softball Poll was released and the SCC Lady Raiders ranked 11th in the nation. The women are currently 40-10 overall.

2003 Governor's Summer Program

SCC's "Studio and Stage: The Ten Minute Script" program has been selected as part of the Governor's Summer Program. Our grant proposal was ranked #1 in the region and #1 in the state and was awarded $18,431.00.

Summer Applications Update

Term III applications continue to roll in. Right now we are experiencing a 22% increase in applications thanks to the good work of Pamela Pelaez and our Admissions staff.

Legislative Update

As you heard from Don Payton, things are on-hold in Tallahassee. We expect that the session will end without a formal budget and that the Governor will have to call them back into session in mid-May. At that time, we are hoping that there will be increased revenue streams and that the Senate position of $35 million more for community colleges will prevail.

Retiree Celebration

On April 25, we will host a celebration for all of our retirees. This is the year when the inaugural DROP class will be "graduating." You are all invited to join us at 2 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium.

Student Leadership

Thanks to Ms. Dede Schaffner for attending the Student Leadership Institute on April 11. I know that she will want to comment on what she heard from the students. Also, you are all invited to the Student Leadership Banquet on Friday, April 25, at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Center.

Advisory Committee Breakfast

Thank you to Dr. Charles English and Mr. Sid Miller for attending our first annual Advisory Committee Breakfast on April 10. We have some excellent advocates in the members of our advisory committees.
