August 2001Introduce Paul Hull, Government Relations Liaison Paul has his Bachelor's degree from University of Florida and his Master's degree from Florida State University. He comes to SCC after serving for many years as the chief aide to Senate Majority Leader, Senator Jim King, Jacksonville. Fall Welcome Back Ceremony The past two days, we have held a series of faculty and staff meetings designed to start the year with a theme of "Putting the Pieces Together." The College's Welcome Back Committee did an excellent job with the opening session yesterday. I would like to thank Dr. Charles English and Mrs. Schaffner for attending and honoring our six 30-year employees. Last night we held an adjunct dinner at the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus. Today, Dr. Harrison hosted a most informative faculty meeting designed around the theme of "Collaboration and Communication." Tonight, you were part of the full-time and adjunct faculty dinner hosted on the Oviedo Campus. Last week, we also held an orientation session for new faculty and Dr. Harrison actually drove them around to all of our primary sites. It has been a busy start to what promises to be our busiest and perhaps best year ever. Enrollment is up nearly 20%. From the emails that the presidents have been trading, SCC is showing the most significant increase in the state. Some interesting statistics that Jim Henningsen recently researched
During the opening sessions, we also have been emphasizing our five strategic goals for 2001-2002.
Mexican STudies Program Update According to Kenna Noone, this summer, SCC finished the first public library in Coba, Mexico. It has evidently proven to be very important in transforming the town. Under the leadership of Laurie Linsley, Beverly Pak, Joe Dixon, Mary Arseneau, and many SCC students, the library is now being used daily by most of the town. The library painted a big SCC logo on the inside of the library with a sign that says, "This library is a gift from Seminole Community College to the people of Coba!" The presence of our nursing students was also appreciated, as was Barbara Hunnicutt"s testing of the wells for bacteria. Barbara's students received an great education in how to use science to solve real world problems. SCC Graduate I am very pleased to report that Sally Sherman is returning to Seminole County as the Deputy County Manager. Several years ago, Sally was our nominee for the FACC Alum of the Year. She won and also got a standing ovation when she told her story about being one of 12 children raised in Sanford in two houses side-by-side. The child of migrant farm workers, Sally emphasized that her family never took federal assistance; her parents taught them to work very hard. Sally came to SCC and received her degree and then completed two Master's degrees. In her spare time, she works with juvenile delinquents. Sally is an inspiration to us all and it will be great to have her back in Seminole County! |
