"First Wednesday" Update - June 4, 2008

2008-09 Budget Update

The 2008-09 budget is still awaiting Governor Crist's approval; his deadline to act upon this budget is June 14. Once we learn of his decision regarding the proposed six percent increase in tuition, we will formally present a final SCC budget for 2008-09 to our Board of Trustees at their June 17 meeting. Please look for a communication about the 2008-09 budget and 2008-09 employee compensation once we learn of the Governor's final determinations.

Paycheck Statements

Effective July 1, 2008, direct deposit statements will no longer be printed and distributed through campus mail. For employees who do not participate in direct deposit, paychecks will continue to be mailed to their home address, but they can also access paycheck information online. The new, online paycheck statements will allow employees to view their pay statements earlier — two days prior to every payday — as well as access current and prior pay statements from remote locations. Also, the online method of distributing pay statements is more secure within SCC's online environment. Attached is a document containing more details about this new monthly process.

A Baccalaureate Degree at SCC

On May 13, 2008, the SCC Board of Trustees approved the submission of a Letter of Intent to Florida's Commissioner of Education indicating SCC's desire to begin offering a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree in Interior Design, effective with the Fall 2009 Term. The next step will be SCC's submission of an entire BAS Interior Design Program proposal to the Commissioner's office in August. Florida's Department of Education will then review SCC's BAS proposal for further adjustments and/or action. Final approval from the Commissioner's office could then come early in 2009, followed by SACS application and accreditation review throughout the spring of 2009.

Emergency Stickers on College Phones

As part of SCC's ongoing commitment to enhancing emergency communications, a red "EMERGENCY" sticker should now be affixed to every telephone at all College sites. These stickers are site-specific, indicating Security's extension for your specific campus, as well as the reminder to dial 911 for life-threatening emergencies. If you are aware of a phone without a red emergency sticker, please contact the Security Office on your campus. Each Security Office also maintains a supply of replacement stickers for each SCC site. If a sticker becomes worn or damaged, please contact the Security Office for a replacement. Here is the contact information for each Security Office:

  • Altamonte Springs: Ext. 6100
  • Heathrow: Ext. 4410
  • Oviedo: Ext. 5020
  • Sanford/Lake Mary: Ext. 2178

Geneva Public Safety Driving Complex

All work has been completed on the new $3 million Public Safety Driving Complex and Driving Track at SCC's Geneva Center. Local law enforcement leaders will tour the new complex and celebrate our region's latest, expanded safety training resource on Tuesday, June 17. The entire project includes a new classroom building and a new quarter-mile driving track that will be used to train officers and SCC students in emergency vehicle and driving techniques. This project was funded by our local cities, the Seminole County Board of Commissioners, the Seminole County Sheriff's Office, the State of Florida and SCC.
